Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis with kids

Strictly speaking I should say Tiroler Oberland rather than Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, but this trio of villages alone offers plenty to do for families with children.

I recommend using public transport. You can’t get into Serfaus by car at all unless you are staying there. You have to park at the park-and-ride car park and take the local metro. Besides the buses, you can also use the cable-car connections.

The biggest draw for children are the huge playgrounds and three beautifully designed themed trails, which are not demanding in any way – neither physically nor in terms of the tasks.

Ötztal with kids

The Ötztal valley is famous above all for skiing. Besides Sölden, World Cup races are also held in Obergurgl further up the valley, which is my Austrian favourite.

For kids there is the huge Widiversum playground at Hochoetz and plenty of trails livened up by hunting for “treasures”. In practice these are very easy-to-find geocaches. Their positions are mostly listed in the official geocaching apps as well. For all the routes, the tourist information centres offer paper maps with details on where each box is located; the boxes contain either a question you need to answer to get letters for the puzzle, or the letters themselves. Once the puzzle is solved, a reward awaits the kids at the information centres.

Salzburg region with kids

The southern and south-eastern Salzburg region is great for an active holiday with kids. Mountains reachable by cable car, lots of playgrounds, water parks, marble runs, gorges and the city of Salzburg itself!

The area is divided by the individual valleys and by how the mountain resorts are grouped together.

There are three large parts. The Gastein valley, Hochkönig and the area grouped under Snowspace (around Wagrain). Then there are individual resorts such as Zauchersee, Rauris or Filzmoos.

You can buy the Salzburgerland Card online for 6 or 12 days.

The website looks a bit odd, so much so that I was worried whether it was real, but my fears were unfounded. You can find more about purchasing and the prices here.

You can buy it at any time; it becomes valid on first use. It arrives by email. It can be printed. I recommend saving it to your phones, though. Ideally among the cards in Google Wallet or Apple Pay.

Collecting stamps

Collecting stamps is a way to motivate kids and liven up their trips.

The Zillertal area offers several options.

A few places offer them separately:

Eggalm - EggAlm Hiking Rally, if you collect at least three stamps and answer the questions correctly, you get a reward. You get the stamp leaflet at the ticket office.
Rosenalm - walk the trail, discover the story of the Fichtenschloss and collect the stamps. You get the stamp leaflet at the top station. Hand it in at the ticket office at the bottom, for example.

Cycling with kids

Cycling lets you cover a much greater distance with kids. On top of that, you get through the less interesting stretches faster. Walking along a road is no fun, but in some places it is the only way to reach the interesting spots.

I was surprised how quickly kids learn to ride a bike. Nowadays, when most kids ride a balance bike, training wheels are not needed. They already have their balance from the balance bike. So in the beginning I ran alongside and held on when necessary, but otherwise we managed without training wheels. Of course you need to keep an eye on them, especially when it comes to the rules of the road, and teach them to brake.

Geocaching

Geocaching is a way to spice up a trip for kids. Who wouldn’t like hunting for hidden treasure? Plus, the search can take you to places you would never otherwise have thought of going.

In short, it is about finding hidden “caches” (treasures) using GPS coordinates. A cache can be of various sizes and contain various things. Usually there is a logbook inside where you write down when and where you found the cache. Some caches also contain items you can swap.

Skiing with kids

With the lack of snow in recent winters, it is a fair question whether to teach kids to ski at all, but we love skiing, so we want to teach the kids too.

We left the first steps to the instructors. I think it was a good choice. The kids learned the proper basics, and they listened to strangers better than to us.

Even now we still occasionally hand them over to instructors to help them improve their technique. You can also find suitable exercises online that you can do with the kids.

Sports trailer

Sports trailers are made by Thule or Croozer, for example. Buying one is an expensive affair, but if you want to do sport with small kids, it is almost essential. The trailer can be used for hiking, cycling, running and even cross-country skiing.

The advantage is that there are plenty of them second-hand, so you do not have to pay the price of a new one, and they do not lose much value.

Motivating kids to go on trips can sometimes be hard and calls for a reward. Such a reward can be a tourist sticker, which also gives them a souvenir of the place.

The stickers are glued into a diary, which you can order from the e-shop or buy at the places that sell the stickers themselves. A sticker costs around 12 Kč.

Each sticker set consists of the sticker itself, a barcode and a stub with a miniature. The barcode is glued into the back of the diary, and once the space runs out you send it to the sticker provider, who sends you a new diary.
