Salzburg

Salzburg is a beautiful city whose historic centre is not too big, so you can easily visit it with kids.

It offers many attractions, so you need to choose carefully.

On the way to the mountains we already stopped at the Salzburg zoo. It is fairly small but has extensive enclosures for the animals, so they can be hard to spot. At first we were disappointed, because in the midday heat all the animals were hiding and we did not see a single one in the first five enclosures.

Things improved after feeding time around four, and in the end we were lucky enough to see leopard cubs and a sleeping otter.

For the visit to Salzburg itself we used the Salzburgerland Card.

With the kids we visited:

• The museum of nature and technology
  • It does not look like it from the outside, but it is really big. You will find just about everything here. The kids enjoyed the science section in the second building most, which is nicely interactive. With the Salzburgerland Card you can go straight in without queuing for a ticket.
• The toy museum
  • A very nicely designed museum for kids. They can touch and play with everything. More of a big playroom than a museum. Suitable for small children too.
• The fortress
  • You can take a funicular up to the fortress. With the Salzburgerland Card you do not have to wait in the ticket queue and can go straight to the turnstiles. We climbed up to the viewpoint on the tower.
• A boat trip
  • You need to pick up a ticket for a specific time in advance. Tickets are sold here.

On the way back to the car we used the Mönchsberg lift and enjoyed the views of Salzburg from this hill.
